At the Geneva Watch Days 2024, Russian independent brand Konstantin Chaykin has unveiled the 1.65mm ThinKing Prototype, which now holds the record for the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. The timepiece leaves behind the record made by the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC with the thickness measuring 1.70mm, released in April this year. Read more about it here.
Konstantin Chaykin 1.65mm ThinKing Prototype The new 1.65mm ThinKing Prototype features a "special steel" 40mm case and the brand’s signature ‘Wristmons’ dial, where the left and right eye represent hours and minutes, and the ‘smile’ has a brand’s name engraved on it. The brand has also invented a case carrying mechanism called PalanKing, which can be affixed on the back of the watch to strengthen it and protect the movement. This external unit features a traditional crown, which can be used to wind the watch. In its thin state though, the watch can be wound through a key.
Case PalanKing
Caseback is closed, but engravings on the caseback give an idea of how the movement is arranged underneath. A manual winding ultra-thin movement Calibre K.23-0, with 2.5Hz frequency and 32-hours of power reserve drives the watch. Thanks to the Swiss lever escapement, a special single ultra-thin winding barrel, and a double balance system with a geared clutch present in the movement help minimise the layers and keep it thin.
To complement this 1.65mm thin case, the brand has developed a special strap out of alligator leather combined with elastic inserts with titanium supports to transfer some of the stress, like sudden shocks, bending, twisting, from the wearer's wrist to the case. The watch weighs only 13.3g gram (excluding the strap). The price and availability of the watch is yet to be decided by the brand.
