A. Lange & Söhne marks 20 Years of the Datograph Perpetual with a platinum edition

First unveiled in 2006, the Datograph Perpetual combines a flyback chronograph and a perpetual calendar with A. Lange & Söhne’s signature outsize date display. Celebrating the model’s 20th anniversary, the Glashütte-based manufacture introduces a new version in 950 platinum, limited to 50 pieces. The watch features a black dial accented by 11 baguette-cut diamond hour markers, paired with a five-row platinum bracelet. This interpretation introduces a distinctive material and aesthetic character while retaining the technical complexity that defines the original.

Precision in Short-Time Measurement and Long-Term Timekeeping
The Datograph Perpetual brings together two fields in which A. Lange & Söhne has established particular technical expertise: chronographs and calendar complications. Controlled by a column wheel, the flyback chronograph incorporates several characteristic Lange developments, including a precisely jumping minute counter that advances instantaneously to ensure clear readings of elapsed time. The flyback function allows a new measurement to start with a single press of the pusher, without first stopping and resetting the chronograph separately.

The perpetual calendar reflects the manufacture’s equally meticulous approach to calendar mechanics, accounting for months of different lengths and leap years while displaying the date, day, month, leap year, and moon phase. Its mechanism requires no manual correction until 2100, when the Gregorian calendar omits a leap year.

The ingenuity of the watch’s mechanisms matches the ease with which it is operated. All calendar indications and the moon-phase display can be jointly advanced with the rapid-correction pusher at 10 o’clock. They can also be adjusted separately with individual recessed correctors. A sophisticated safety mechanism prevents inadvertent actuation of the rapid-correction pusher.

Black Dial with Diamond Hour Markers
The black dial preserves the Datograph Perpetual’s thoughtfully arranged layout of its numerous indications. The Lange outsize date appears in its characteristic framed twin aperture at 12 o’clock and marks the tip of an equilateral triangle. The subdials are located below the horizontal center axis of the dial, forming the base of the triangle. The display at 9 o’clock combines the small seconds, day of the week, and day-night indicator, while the display at 3 o’clock combines the month, leap-year indication, and precisely jumping chronograph minute counter.

41 mm case with diamond hour markers

The harmonious configuration of the indications for the time, calendar, and chronograph functions is complemented by the moon-phase display at 6 o’clock. The display also lives up to the watch’s focus on long-term precision: it will deviate from the true lunar cycle by only one day after 122.6 years if the watch is kept running continuously. The tachymeter scale on the outer edge of the dial adds a practical dimension to the chronograph, allowing the wearer to measure average speed over a known distance.

In this new iteration, A. Lange & Söhne lends the design a new radiance with 11 manually applied baguette-cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.13 carats in place of the hour markers. The markers at 4 and 8 o’clock have been omitted to accommodate the rhodié-toned auxiliary dials, which have been positioned slightly lower and stand out clearly against the black background.

Platinum Case and Integrated Bracelet
The case is crafted from 950 platinum and measures 41mm in diameter and 13.5mm thick. A five-row bracelet in the same material is secured by a quick-release deployant buckle. Alternating polished and matte surfaces, together with chamfered link edges, emphasize the bracelet’s smooth design and its integration into the case.

As with every A. Lange & Söhne timepiece, the sophistication of the exterior is matched by the mechanical complexity and finishing of the movement within. In keeping with the manufacture’s exacting standards, the movement is assembled twice, with each stage subject to rigorous quality controls to ensure the precision of its functions and the quality of its finish.

The hand-wound Caliber L952.1

The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the hand-wound Caliber L952.1, comprising 556 components, 223 of which are dedicated to the perpetual calendar alone. The colorful interplay of untreated German silver for the plates and bridges, blued screws, and four screwed gold chatons highlights the mechanical prowess, while the movement also offers a fascinating view of the chronograph mechanism. A classic column wheel precisely coordinates the switching sequences through a system of rockers and levers.Operating at a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour, or 2.5 Hz, Caliber L952.1 delivers a 36-hour power reserve when fully wound.
