Renowned Panerai expert Francesco Ferretti's watch collection

Italian watch store Orologeria Ferretti has been a Panerai retailer since 1993. Since then, its founder, Francesco Ferretti, and his son Esiodo have built one of the most important and comprehensive collections related to the Italian brand.
A visit to Panerai’s flagship boutique (and museum) at the Piazza San Giovanni in Florence is undoubtedly a “must” on every Paneristi’s horological to-do list. But while the trip to the capital city of the Tuscany region and the historical headquarters of the Italian dive-watch brand is more than worthwhile for multiple reasons, the real horological treasure can be found about an hour outside of Florence, in Montecatini Terme. There, Francesco Ferretti and his son Esiodo have put together one of the largest and most important collections of “period and military origin watches (with focus on the Panerai articles of which it has been official concessionaire since 1993).”

Surprisingly, the brand’s own museum in Florence has fewer vintage highlights on display, but it provides a unique shopping experience, thanks to its location and its carrying most of the current collection. One reason for this rather unusual situation: when Panerai was about to be relaunched exclusively as a watch brand in the 1990s, Richemont didn’t seem to embrace the full scope of the brand’s past and missed out on important historical pieces and some of the non-watch-related products, while Ferretti had both the vision and the connections and, ultimately, also the access to Panerai’s archives.

On the first floor of the store, the Ferrettis have created their own version of a Panerai museum, showing a unique selection of clocks, documents (even the invoices from Rolex are on display), dive instruments, depth gauges, calculating devices, signalisation tools, spare parts, etc. from the Italian brand.
