A new Fiftysix self-winding takes centrestage at Vacheron Constantin

The latest version of the dress watch is in black and gold, a combination previously not seen in the collection
The Fiftysix is a collection that Vacheron launched in 2018, and one that has largely stayed low key, given big releases in the Overseas and Patrimony lines in the recent years. Inspired by the Ref. 6073, which was unveiled in 1956 (and therefore the name of the line), the collection is a retro-contemporary one, and has much of its design rooted in the 1950s, an era of round, elegant timepieces. The 35mm Ref. 6073 was also one of its very first Vacheron Constantin watches to feature a self-winding movement at a time where manual winding was the order of the day.

Now the brand has released a new version in black, a colour hitherto unseen in the collection (there have been dials in grey, silver, brown, and blue previously). The Fiftysix self-winding Ref. 4600E/000R-H101 is a 40 mm pink gold time and date watch, with a  sector-type dial, reminiscent of watches produced in the 50s. The dial, though black, has an opaline finish in the centre and sunburst on the surrounding chapter ring. The alternating Arabic numerals and baton markers in pink gold are applied, and the baton markers and  hands are coated with luminescent material. There is a date window at 3, which mirrors the colour of the dial, and a retro style box-type sapphire crystal tops the case. The lugs of the watch are inspired by the branches of the Maltese Cross, the emblem of the maison. This retro-contemporary aesthetic is matched by an anthracite nubuck calfskin leather strap with ecru stitching.

Turning the watch over reveals the Calibre 1326 self-winding movement under a sapphire crystal. The movement has a skeleton pink gold oscillating weight that is adorned with a Maltese cross, and features Côtes de Genève finishing. Operating at 4Hz, it has a 48 hour power reserve.
