Roger Dubuis unveils a new Knights of the Round Table watch, the Omniscient Merlin

The brand’s latest work of art depicts the essence of Merlin’s immortal story
The hyper-horology brand expands its Knights of the Round Table collection with the introduction of the Omniscient Merlin timepiece in the line. The collection pays tribute to King Arthur's legendary stories and was launched in 2013 with Excalibur Automatic Limited Edition. Carrying forward the storyline, the latest timepiece now brings Merlin’s immortal tale, whose character’s presence has a pivotal role in the fables and legacy of King Arthur.

In the collection of stories about the life of King Arthur, Merlin was his counsellor and magician. He also helped restore the Pendragon to the throne, a critical moment in Arthurian legend, as it sparked the narrative that led to Arthur’s birth and the ultimate quest for the Holy Grail. Now, his magic summons into the Omniscient Merlin timepiece in many ways.

The base plate of the dial is crafted in 18K Pink Gold and has been worked on with meticulous holes and hexagonal sections, which are treated with a layer of black PVD. There are 56 tower blocks, all mounted by hand, and several of them are treated with lasering, sunray pattern, and matte finish. There are 28 blocks of authentic basalt, 9 blocks of solid pink gold, 10 blocks of black glass in the Murano style, and 9 blocks of transparent glass. To add depth and contrast, the towers are mounted in a variety of heights, ranging from 0.2mm to 3.7mm.

Further accentuating the dial are the 12 micro-engraved 18K pink gold crafted knights with unique poses and swords, standing as hour markers. A black patina is applied to the knights to soften their brightness. The surface on which they are standing is a sturdy pathway made from black PVD-treated pink gold with an engraved hexagonal pattern. There are partially skeletonised hour and minute hands.

The 45mm timepiece is topped with a sapphire crystal and features a rose gold bezel and a Murano glass crown in black with a crown protector shaped like a guard of a sword. Powering it is an in-house automatic calibre Monobalancier RD821, which features 14 different types of hand-finishing across all the parts, an essential requirement for the Poinçon de Genève; one of the most exclusive certifications in watchmaking today. Turning the watch also reveals the 360° oscillating weight inspired by the stained glass windows of mediaeval castles.

The watch is a 28-piece limited edition and comes on a black calf-skin leather strap with a pink gold folding buckle and a modern Quick Release System.
