Ulysse Nardin is a brand that has been long associated with the nautical world. So it comes as no surprise that on the occasion of World Oceans Day, the Swiss watchmaking powerhouse has unveiled a new and stunning shark-themed limited edition DIVER watch – the Diver Lemon Shark. Crafted in a 42mm black steel case, the timepiece is decorated with hints of yellow as a homage to the lemon shark. “They (Sharks) are largely misjudged to be dangerous to humans, which are not their natural prey,” says Patrick Pruniaux, CEO, Ulysse Nardin. “We and OCEARCH believe in education. The more informed the public is about these magnificent creatures, the more they will respect their place in the natural hierarchy of the oceans.

OCEARCH is a non-profit organisation dedicated to collecting previously unattainable and important information about the ocean. The release of this timepiece also showcases Ulysse Nardin celebrating its community of friends and partners, including OCEARCH, photographer and diver like Fred Buyle, and the Florida International University and its Aquarius Relief Base underwater research laboratory. After teaming up in June 2020, Chris Fisher, Founder & Expedition Leader of OCEARCH, says “we need to speed up scientific discoveries if we are going to have any chance of leaving healthy oceans behind for our grandchildren.”

Friend of the brand, professional photographer Fred Buyle uses his craft to help with the bio-tagging of sharks that further assists scientists and researchers understand them.“Lemon sharks are not aggressive towards people yet they are nearly a threatened species. Bio-tagging is essential to having a larger perspective on how they live," says Buyle.

The brand has continued to support the task of conservation of the oceans over the years -- they have fashioned discarded fishing nets into watch bands and helped develop scientific knowledge in the conservation of sharks by supporting relevant organisations. These efforts are a part of the brand's environmental commitment, which follows the United Nations guidelines and their 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that are to be met by 2030.
Fred uses his knowledge and experience to dive with scientists documenting the bio-tagging process.
