In a new collaboration with fashion designer Matthew Williams and his Milan-based streetwear brand 1017 Alyx 9SM, luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet introduced two new models of the iconic Royal Oak in 18K yellow gold and two Royal Oak Offshore in 18K white gold. Williams is currently the creative director of Givenchy’s women and menswear.
The four references are for sale. The fifth reference, a Royal Oak Chronograph is to be auctioned in Tokyo, with the proceeds going to two NGOs - Kids in Motion and Right to Play.
The 37mm and 41mm models have been added in the Royal Oak collection and the two in Royal Oak Offshore are 42mm. For the first time, both the collections have models with the same aesthetics - the models are monochromatic with vertical satin finishing, and hour markers have been removed for a minimalistic and enhanced visual of the dial.
The 37mm Royal Oak features hours, minutes, and seconds, driven by automatic Caliber 5909 with a power reserve of about 60 hours. The 41mm is a chronograph housed with automatic Caliber 4409 offering about 70 hours of reserve. The subdials are absent, and at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock only the hands of the chronograph feature. For both, the dial is signed with "Audemars Piguet" in gold applique at 12 o’clock and the transferred "1017 ALYX 9SM" at 6 o’clock.
The 42mm Royal Oak Offshore models are minimalist yet chunkier. Significant to the Offshore, the AP monogram, with the date aperture next to it, is at 3 o’clock. The chronograph subdials are absent leaving only the hands at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock. Powering the models is Caliber 4404 which includes a flyback function. Black rubber straps are also included with the timepieces.
The model for the auction is the 41mm Royal Oak Chronograph with a two-tone aesthetic in 18K yellow gold and stainless steel. The dial is black PVD-coated gold with a vertical satin finishing. Similar to the other models, both the signatures are present and the chronograph counters are removed. Powering the model is automatic Caliber 4409.
All the models are limited editions, with the movements equipped with 22K yellow or white gold oscillating weights, bearing the “1017 ALYX 9SM” signature, Newton's millimetre, and the rotor weight - the technical details, synonymous with Matthew Williams' brand, indicated on his buckles.
