Urwerk’s new UR-150 Scorpion limited edition is here

The latest timepiece comes in two variations, Titan and Dark, each a limited edition of 50
Urwerk’s name is synonymous with extraordinary designs, and in keeping with this, the brand has launched its new UR-150 Scorpion, reinventing its iconic satellite hours complication. The timepiece comes in two versions - the UR-150 Scorpion Titan and the UR-150 Scorpion Dark, differentiated by a green- and red-tipped skeletonised retrograde minute hand respectively.

Limited to 50 pieces each, the 42.49mm timepieces feature a sandblasted and shot-blasted titanium and steel case (Titan), and anthracite and PVD-treated steel case (Dark). The crown is at 12 o’clock, like a usual Urwerk timepiece, and the dial is skeletonised and displays satellite jumping hours, arranged on the three different black plates. The retrograde minute hand moves from the 120 to 240-degree minutes sector that shows 0 minutes to 60 minutes (which is green or red, depending on the model) by moving from right to left.

Once the minute hand hits 60 minutes, the satellite hours spin on their axes at 270 degrees and jump to show the next hour, and minute hand comes to 0. What's interesting is that all of  this happens in 1/100th of a second. The Arabic hours, minutes, and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova®.

“In order to drive all the satellites, guide the hour hand, and ensure that each element jumps at just the right time, we have designed a new satellite complication system. It is based around a flying wheel and pinion positioned between the satellites and the base movement. It deciphers and follows the ‘guiding thread’ of a cam. We have therefore replaced our ‘classic’ device based on Maltese crosses with this cam and a rack system,” says  Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and URWERK co-founder. “This necessitated developing a spring so special that we needed to machine it in our own workshop. To make this burst of movement more visible, we have doubled the usual distance between the 60 and 0 markers,” he adds.
