A new Historiques 222 in steel to inaugurate Vacheron Constantin’s 270th anniversary

The latest Historiques 222 is the reissue of the iconic Vacheron Constantin 222 model launched in 1977
This year Vacheron Constantin is celebrating its 270th anniversary and the brand will commemorate the occasion throughout the year. However, flagging off the milestone occasion is a new Historiques 222 (Ref. 4200H/222A-B934) in steel, a reissue of the iconic Historiques 222 that was launched in 1977. Designed by Swiss watch designer Jorg Hysek, the original model gained popularity for being both a sports and a formal watch. Greatly appreciated by watch lovers and collectors, the watch was also nicknamed ‘Jumbo’. In 2022, the 222 was unveiled in yellow gold to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the brand.

Though the latest timepiece is a contemporary version, it references the progenitor in several ways. It has a similar 37mm tonneau-shaped monobloc case featuring a Maltese cross stamped at 5 o’clock, a fluted bezel, and an integrated bracelet with long hexagonal central links. The new matte blue dial features similar design codes, like with baton white-gold hour markers and hands coated with Super-LumiNova® that appears off-white during the day and lime green at night, and a date window at 3 o’clock, which is pulled towards the centre; earlier it intersected the minute track. The brand’s logo placement and ‘automatic’ also hold the same position.

The legendary 1977 model was known for its extra-thin old LeCoultre 920-based Caliber 1120 movement beneath the closed caseback; the new version also has a 7.95mm thin case and a sapphire crystal caseback that reveals a 222 engraved 22K 3N yellow gold oscillating weight and an in-house Calibre 2455/2, beating at 4Hz and providing a 40-hour power reserve. The watch is water resistant up to 50 metres.

“This 270th anniversary will also bring its share of horological surprises and expressions of watchmaking expertise – undoubtedly worthy of standing alongside the previous anniversary models, ” says Alexandra Vogler, Vacheron Constantin CMO. “The Historiques 222 will be followed by other new models throughout this anniversary year,” she added.

The watch is available exclusively at Vacheron Constantin boutiques.
