Launched in 1990, Breguet’s Marine collection was the brand’s first line dedicated to sporty, water-ready watches that also paid tribute to its deep maritime heritage. In 2018, Breguet reimagined the line with integrated lugs and clean Roman markers, giving it a modern appeal. Released this year, was the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante, featuring a running equation of time mechanism, combined with a perpetual calendar and a tourbillon. And while that reference focused on the technical side of things, now the brand has unveiled the time and date Marine 5517 and Chronographe 5527.
The highlight of the latest pieces is the decoration on their dial–the 18K gold hand-guilloché ‘Quai de l'Horloge’, a new motif introduced last year for the brand's 250th anniversary. Taking its name from Île de la Cité, where A.L. Breguet has his workshop and where his marine chronometers were produced, the pattern is inspired by the singular curves of the Île de la Cité and the slender refinement of the Île Saint-Louis, two islands in the River Seine.
Breguet Marine 5517
The new Marine 5517 models are launched in three iterations in three different materials - 18K white gold (Ref. 5517BB/YA / BZ0), 18K rose gold (Ref. 5517BR/99/RZ0), and titanium (Ref. 5517TI/Y9/TZ0). While the design of all three is essentially the same, they are distinguished with different colour lacquer on each dial. The ‘Quai de l'Horloge’ has been lacquered in ice blue, black, and a dark blue gradient with rhodium plated, black and blue hour rings, for the aforementioned order.
The Breguet Arabic numerals on the dial are in blue in the ice blue model, while the other two models feature 18K rose gold numerals and coated with luminescence of the same colour as that of the numerals. Same goes for the apple-shaped hour and minute hands and the date window frame at 6 o’clock. Also, notably, the design of the crown guards is evocative of the waves of the Île de la Cité.
Visible from the sapphire crystal caseback is the automatic Breguet signed Calibre 777A with 4Hz frequency, boasting 55 hours of power reserve. The watches measure 40 mm and are complemented with either a rubber strap or the matching material bracelet with 3-blade folding clasp.
Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527
Just like the 5517, the Chronographe 5527 has also been launched in three iterations of ice blue, dark blue, and black, but adding more to its character is a gradient effect that is lighter towards the centre and darker at the periphery.
With a larger case size of 42.3 mm, the watches are crafted in 18K white gold (Ref. 5527BB/YA/BW0), 18K rose gold (Ref. 5527BR/Y9/RW0), and titanium (Ref. 5527TI/GA/TW0). The contrast of the dial aesthetics also remains the same. However, being chronographs, the dial features chronograph counters at 3 and 9 o’clock, for minute and small seconds, respectively.
Powering the chronographs is the Breguet signed automatic Calibre 582QA with 4 Hz frequency, providing 48 hours of power reserve. The watches are complemented with either a rubber strap or a matching metal bracelet.
