Now we know that Audemars Piguet is not a shy brand. From the launch of one of the world's first luxury steel sports watch (the Royal Oak) in 1972 to the grand release of Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet two years ago, Audemars Piguet has managed to push the envelope time and again, not to mention that the brand consistently performs well on the auction block. However, like most new ideas when unveiled to the world cause a stir, some releases from Audemars Piguet have received polarising comments. Be it the AP Royal Oak Concept Black Panther timepiece or the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet, the reactions are extreme. There seems to be no in-between.
And now the brand has released the 2021 Royak Oak 'Jumbo' timepieces. The AP 'Jumbo' has been a timepiece of utmost contention since its creation in 1972 and the numerous variations that were released in the following years. However the release of the 2021 Royak Oak 'Jumbo' Extra-Thin clicked for me.
Presented in a full 950 platinum case in 39mm (just the right size for me), the watch has an integrated bracelet with a beautiful smoked green dial in sunburst pattern. With new version, Audemars Piguet took the classic Ref no. 15202 and has given it a new configuration that works for me. A smaller case size and an overall thickness of just 8.1mm not only gives the 'Jumbo' a rather slender appearance but also makes the watch present the right amount of chunkiness when on the wrist (especially for women with slender wrists like me). Beating inside the timepiece is AP's trust, impressive Calibre 2121, equipped with a gold winding mass that can viewed via the open caseback. Offering the hours, minute, and of course date display functions, the watch is sophisticated in its simplicity.
If pizzaz is what you want, then Audemars Piguet has got you covered there as well. Apart from the green dial version, the Le Brassus-based Swiss watch brand also released three new diamond-set versions of the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-thin. Each of the blingy versions comes in a 39mm case made of 18-carat pink or white gold decorated with 1,102 brilliant-cut diamonds. The watches are available in a 'Petite Tapisserie' patterned dial in light blue and black options. These dials are decorated with baguette-cut diamond hour-markers with colour-coordinated hands in luminescent coating. Powered by the Manufacture Calibre 2121, the watch clocks in a power reserve of 40 hours and a 22-carat gold oscillating weight.
