Sharing the common values of sustainability, Swiss giants Hublot and Nespresso
have partnered to create a watch from recycled aluminium capsules extracted from the coffee grounds. Hublot is known for its Art of Fusion and Nespresso for the Art of Coffee, and together these two ideas now mark the creation of the new Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin. The green-coloured watch is made from seven different materials, and is a specific shade used for Nespresso’s “Master Origins Peru Organic” coffee capsule -
it took Hublot a year to research and find the balance and uniformity of the colour among the materials.
The 42mm case of the watch, along with the crown and pusher, is made from recycled aluminium and anodised to give it the green colour. It is then satin-finished and polished. The 28% of recycled aluminium used for the case is obtained from the Nespresso coffee capsules. On the crown, the “N” of Nespresso is engraved. Inside the case is the green skeletonised dial which is varnished along with the hands. Featured on the dial are large Arabic numeral hour markers. At 3 o’clock lies the 60-minute counter as well as the date window, and the small seconds at 9 o’clock.
The automatic HUB1280 movement driving the watch with about 72 hours of power reserve, is visible through the skeleton dial and the satin-finished eco-titanium caseback. The watch comes with a rubber and a fabric strap. For the rubber strap, Hublot has fused 4.1% of recycled coffee grounds from Nespresso capsules with 8.2% recycled white rubber, all mixed with Hublot’s usual formula for making the rubber straps. For the fabric strap, Hublot joined hands with one of Nespresso’s partners, the SingTex, to make the fabric called Scafé out of recycled coffee grounds. The material is a composition of 5% coffee grounds and 95% recycled polyester. For the first time, Scafé has been used for making watch straps. The watch brand has utilised its One Click interchangeable strap system for easy changing of the straps. The watch is water-resistant up to 100 metres.
The timepiece is a limited edition of 200 pieces and comes inside a Hublot Greenbox case crafted from traceable oak with its interior made from recycled items like fabrics, plastic yarns, PET, and eco-labelled paper and cardboard. Hublot will use this box for all its new collections going further. To mark its collaboration with Nespresso, the box has two brand logos attached using the coffee grounds. It is priced at approx. INR 19,82,000.
