Jaeger-LeCoultre's fascinating timepieces at Watches and Wonders 2022

Jaeger-LeCoultre presents a panoply of new watches and clocks at the latest edition of the Watches and Wonders exhibition.

Unveiled at the Watches and Wonders exhibition happening in Switzerland's Geneva is Jaeger-LeCoultre's marvellous range of timepieces exuding the brand's quest for brilliance. Atmos Hybris Mechanica Calibre 590, Atmos Infinite, Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948, Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945, Polaris Perpetual Calendar and Rendezvous Star are all set to impress the community. These pieces are bringing to the table precision, design and a solid dose of wonderment. Let's take a closer look at Jaeger-LeCoultre's Watches and Wonders 2022 novelties.

Atmos Hybris Mechanica Calibre 590

Born in 1928, the Atmos is inimitable. The legacy of Atmos brings us to the Atmos Hybris Mechanica Calibre 590 Ref. Q5765300 - the most complex Atmos clock ever created producing the cycles of the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon. This avant-garde perpetual clock runs on air and displays -- in three dimensions and in real time -- the relative positions and movements of the Earth, the Moon and the Sun.

From miniature painting and laser engraving to lacquer-work and meteorite inlay, the artisans at the manufacture leave no stone unturned to create this heavenly clock. The engine inside is the new Calibre 590 which has been entirely conceived, designed, and built within the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre and assembled in the Atmos atelier, a workshop solely dedicated to Atmos. You can immediately notice the peripheral ring, formed of two layers, on the face of the clock. The upper layer displays the hour-and-minute track alongside the names of the seasons. At the centre of the dial, polished golden metal rays depict the Sun.

This Earth-and-Moon disc orbits the central Sun, making a complete rotation in one solar year, indicating the seasons as it turns. Its extreme precision lies in its cycle of 365.2466 days, which is so close to the reference value of 365.2425 days found in the Gregorian calendar.

Atmos Infinite

Another one in the Atmos lineup is the Atmos Infinite Ref. Q5405311. The clock justifies its name given how its mechanism seems to float freely within its cylindrical glass cabinet. Its splendiferous aesthetics are a result of the distinctive shape of its movement. Spelling out the classic sophistication of Art Deco 'glass box' cabinet for the 21st century, the cylindrical glass cabinet of the Atmos Infinite also makes subtle hints at the rounded glass domes of the very earliest models.

The almost-invisible glass supports secure the Atmos mechanism. The black lacquered dial has two concentric circles onto which polished baton-shaped indexes have been applied and is augmented by hands that match the silvery rhodium finish of the mechanism. On a metal outer ring, the minutes are marked by tiny indented dots. The annular balance spins back and forth in its slow and enchanting rhythm beneath the body of the movement. The clock is driven by the perpetual Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 570.

Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948

Jaeger-LeCoultre has unveiled a fabulous interpretation of the Universal Time - the Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948 Ref. Q52834E1. Its automatic calibre has been conceived, developed and entirely produced within the Manufacture. Right at its centre is the map of the world as seen from the North Pole. This map floats above the dial bed on a domed skeleton formed by the longitudes and latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Its extraordinary attention to detail is evident in the outlines of the continent cut from a sheet of white gold and is embellished with champlevé enamel. The Major landscape features showcase the miniature-painted details, courtesy the master artisans of the Manufacture's MétiersRares® (Rare Handcrafts™) atelier.

The dial bed is a disc of evocative blue translucent lacquer applied over a wavy guilloché pattern that gives the impression of the movement of the sea and the lunar influence on its tides. The flying tourbillon looks to be floating weightlessly above the blue oceans, spinning in 60 seconds. Each time zone is represented by the name of a city, arranged in a ring around the central dial. Set outside the city ring are two concentric fixed rings - a 24-hour indicator with applied numerals and rectangular indexes, and a minute track laser-engraved on a ring of blue lacquer that tones with the blue oceans.

Imitating the rotation of the Earth on its axis, the domed Earth map -- together with the Universal Tourbillon and city ring -- makes a complete 360-degree revolution in 24 hours, always indicating the right time in each city. The wearer can set the local time by the same crown when arriving at a new destination, which moves only the hour hand, in one-hour jumps forwards or backwards, allowing the minutes and seconds to continue running precisely.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 948 automatic movement sits inside the 43mm white gold case, delivering a power reserve of around 48 hours. The watch is a limited edition of 20 pieces and is paired with an alligator leather strap with a deployant buckle.

Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945

The two beautiful new interpretations of the Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 -- Galaxia Ref. Q5262470 in pink gold and Ref. Q5263481 Atomium in white gold -- are limited editions of five pieces each. Originally created in 2010, the Calibre 945 clubs a sky chart with a celestial vault, a zodiacal calendar, and a minute repeater, and is further amplified by Jaeger-LeCoultre's Cosmotourbillon - a celestial flying tourbillon. The astronomical timekeeping of the piece is the outcome of the mechanism which displays the passing of sidereal time, based on the stars.

The centre of the dial features a celestial vault that maps the Northern Hemisphere night sky as seen from the 46th parallel -- the latitude of Jaeger-LeCoultre's home in the Vallée de Joux -- tracking the position of the constellations in real time. The Cosmotourbillon measures the passing of time as it makes a complete, anti-clockwise circuit of the dial in one sidereal day.

At the edge of the dial, you can spot a golden sun-shaped pointer which indicates the month of the zodiacal calendar and solar time on a 24-hour scale. The Dauphine-shaped hands show the minutes and 12-hour cycles of civil time, which are displayed on two concentric rings on the flange of the dial. To create the star map, for the first time the luxury watchmaker has used the grisaille enamel which creates a three-dimensional effect.

With a minute repeater, this chiming timepiece finds its home inside a 45mm case. It is powered by Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 945 automatic movement and delivers a power reserve of around 40 hours. The Galaxia in pink gold features a black dial while the Atomium in white gold has a blue dial. Water resistant upto 50 metres, both the iterations have been paired with an alligator leather strap.

Polaris Perpetual Calendar

This is the first time Jaeger-LeCoultre is introducing a perpetual calendar to the Polaris line. Powering the timepiece is the robust Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 868AA automatic movement that first appeared in 2013. For 2022, the engine undergoes some upgrades, creating a retrograde display of Southern Hemisphere moonphases as well as getting an increase in the power reserve to 70 hours.

Lacquered in a deep gradient-blue colour, the dial of the timepiece draws inspiration from the Polaris Mariner Memovox. The calendar indications are displayed on three sub-dials. The date, month, and day indicators are at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock respectively, with the year displayed within the month indicator. The moonphases are displayed at 6 o'clock with a retrograde display for the Southern Hemisphere that frames a classical display for its Northern counterpart. On the dial are skeletonised hands and at the centre of the dial is a small security zone indicator that shows red between the hours of 20:00 and 04:00, warning the wearer to not adjust the time or calendar indications.

The 42mm case, available in steel (Ref. Q9088480) or pink gold (Ref. Q9082480), features two pushers, where the top crown rotates the inner bezel and the lower crown sets the time and is used for winding.

The steel reference is offered with both a three-link steel bracelet and a textured rubber strap and the pink gold piece is complemented by a blue rubber strap and an alligator strap with a folding buckle. The brand offers customisations with a collection of calfskin straps in a variety of colours.

Rendez-Vous Star

If shooting stars fascinate you, then this romanticism continues on your wrist too with the Rendez-Vous Star. The timepiece is offered in two variations - Ref. Q36434C1 which is a white gold case with a dial in fine tones of silvery blue and Ref. Q36424C1 which is a pink gold case with a dial in muted golden browns. The uppermost of the dial's three layers -- made of transparent sapphire glass -- have been drizzled with transferred stars and feature hand-painted with clouds and a crescent moon, which masks the shooting star when it is inactive. Beneath this is a rotating circular disc in titanium with a cut-out of the shooting star - night blue for the white gold version and in a dark taupe colour for the pink gold version.

When the disc is activated, it starts spinning, sending the star on its curving path across the upper dial. Identifying the trajectory of the shooting star, a three-quarter circle of diamonds is set into the sapphire glass dial. Talking about the shimmering stone, the bezel is set with a circle of diamonds, with the upper surfaces of the lugs and the top of the crown also set in diamonds. Completing the Rendez-Vous Star in 36mm is an alligator leather strap. The piece is powered by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 734 automatic movement that churns out a power reserve of around 70 hours.

Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star

Presenting the beauty of a night sky with stars twinkling, the watchmaker adds a dial made of blue Aventurine to the Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star Ref. Q3642470. There are three discs, layered over each other. The first layer is an oval of Aventurine which hides the shooting star when it is inactive. Beneath it is a circular disc of Aventurine with a cut-out of the shooting star. When activated, this disc spins and sends the star on its curving path across the upper dial. As the star passes, the cut-out reveals the deepest layer of the dial - a fixed disc of golden metal with a glowing gradient finish that gives the wearer a sense of movement.

A ring of applied numerals in the signature Floral font and applied hemispherical hour markers surround the central display of the timepiece. The blue of the dial augments the beauty of its shiny blue alligator strap with a folding buckle. A fully-set pink gold bracelet designed especially for the Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star is also available. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 734 movement finds its home inside a 36mm pink gold case and features a power reserve of around 70 hours.
