Vacheron Constantin celebrates 270th anniversary merging past and future

The brand releases two timepieces: Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time and La Quête du Temps astronomical clock
The world’s oldest watchmaker Vacheron Constantin is celebrating its 270th anniversary today.  To mark this celebration, the maison released two celestial timepieces : Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time and La Quête du Temps astronomical clock.

Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time

The Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time is a double-sided wristwatch that took three years to develop, powered by the new manually wound Calibre 3670, a 512-component movement protected by four patent applications. It is a synthesis of astronomical complication, retrograde time display, and métiers d’art, presented in a 43 mm white gold case just 13.58 mm thick. It is limited to only 20 pieces.

Tribute to the Quest of Time

On the front dial, a golden human figure inspired by the 1930 Bras en l’Air pocket watch is positioned on the centre and is used to tell time. It extends its arms to indicate the time via a double retrograde display. Unlike its historic predecessor, Bras en l’air pocket watch, which revealed the time only on demand, this new creation offers two display modes: ‘active,’ with time permanently visible, and ‘standby,’ where the figure rests until a pusher at 10 o’clock is pressed to activate the arms. It is based on the innovative Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar of 2019, Calibre 3610 QP, that featured standby and active modes. The arcs for the hour and minute scales are crafted from 18-karat white gold with an opaline finish, while 27 applied indexes in 18-karat 3N yellow gold complete the composition.

Hand-engraved titanium moon at 12 o'clock

The backdrop of the front dial is a star chart of the night sky as seen from Geneva on 17 September 1755, the date of the Maison’s founding. Created in collaboration with the Geneva Observatory, this precise recreation of the constellations forms a dynamic background for the central human figure. At 12 o’clock, a hand-engraved titanium moon, polished and finished with contrasting golden and blue PVD to mark its phases, rotates with astronomical fidelity. The dial itself is constructed in two layers of sapphire crystal, with metallisation used to produce the blue gradient and the star map.

The reverse side of the watch extends the astronomical theme with a sky chart displaying sidereal time and tracking constellations in real time. This indication is accurate to within a single day’s variation over 9,130 years. The celestial vault is laser-engraved on sapphire, with blue metallisation, yellow indications are transfer-printed, and gold powder is used for month markers.

It is powered by Calibre 3670

It is powered by 512 components movement, Calibre 3670. It is finished by hand in accordance with the Poinçon de Genève. The bridges are decorated with circular satin brushing, with the main bridge showcasing an engraved 270th anniversary emblem, visible through the sapphire back. Despite the density of complication, the calibre measures just 34 mm in diameter and 7.8 mm thick.

The watch incorporates four new patented mechanisms. The first governs the sequential double power reserve display, indicating the six days of energy across two arcs, first from ‘6 to 3’ and then from ‘3 to 0.’ The second is a governor for the retrograde system, ensuring that the hour and minute arms—progressing at different speeds—reset in perfect synchrony at midnight or noon. The third is the moon phase with age indication, using a spherical 3D moon encircled by a scale marked with the moon’s age in days, both rotating together over 29.5 days. The fourth is a moon correction system, allowing safe adjustment at any time of day without damaging the mechanism or disturbing its operation.

It comes dressed in a  dark blue alligator leather strap with alligator lining, hand-stitched using a gold thread fastened using 18-karat white gold folding clasp.
