Red alert: The TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition packs a solid punch

A new rendition of the iconic Heuer Carrera Ref. 2447, think of the watch as a piece of history with a modern update.
For those who don’t know, the Heuer Carrera Ref. 2447 is one of those watches that built brand Heuer. When Jack Heuer took over the company in 1962, he wanted to make a watch inspired by one of the most bad-ass races of the time – the Carrera Panamericana, held on the open roads of Mexico that was discontinued in 1954 given how dangerous it was. Given that the watch brand was already known for sports timers, dashboard clocks and, wristworn chronographs, Jack Heuer spearheaded the development of the Heuer Carrera Ref 2447, and launched it a year later. Here was a 36mm steel watch for gentleman drivers, characterised by an uncluttered dial, sharp, faceted lugs, applied markers, and stepped sub-dials, inspired both by industrial design (Jack Heuer loved industrial design), and of course, motorsports. By the 70s, the Carrera had reached high levels of recognition, and developed a legion of followers. It’s this iconic watch that gets a fiery comeback in the TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition (Ref. CBK221G.FC6479).

That the TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition (Ref. CBK221G.FC6479) packs a punch would be an understatement. At 39mm, the steel watch starts with a strong size (Ref. 2477 was 36mm), and then the deep red steps in to take its impact several notches higher. The dial has a sunray finish, while the hours, minutes and small seconds indicator are snailed. The indexes and hours and minutes hands are faceted, rhodium-plated and coated with Super-LumiNova®. The signature 'Heuer' logo, under the Carrera name, rests at 12.

The logos aren't the only features reminiscent of Ref. 2447 in the TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition. The signature lugs are sharp and faceted, and pushers polished. The crown features the ‘Heuer’ logo, and the bezel has been designed without a tachymeter scale to keep the overall aesthetics in line with the 1963 silver-dial Heuer Carrera.

The watch is powered by the in-house Calibre Heuer 02 (the Ref. 2447 had a Valjoux movement), with a power reserve of 80 hours. The red makes an appearance on the column wheel and oscillating mass engravings as well, seen through the exhibition caseback. The watch is a limited edition of 600 pieces, and in keeping with that, the caseback will be engraved with ‘ONE OF 600’ and ‘Limited Edition’. The watch is set on black alligator leather straps.
