Blancpain Tribute to Fifty Fathom: Reinterpreting an iconic model

Blancpain digs into its archive to bring us a reinterpretation of the emblematic timepiece Tribute to Fifty Fathoms No Rads.

During the mid 1960s, Blancpain released the Fifty Fathoms “no radiations” timepiece that was used by the German Navy's Combat Swimmers. This timepiece was an important release because it was stamped with a “no radiations” logo. This indicated that the Maison was not using luminescent materials that were composed of radium.

The inclusion of the distinctive symbol forged the success of the iconic models then and pushed the brand to release the new Tribute to Fifty Fathoms No Rad. Staying true to the original timepiece, the new watch features a matt black dial that is decorated with geometrical hour-markers and a combination of traditional round dots and diamond-shaped mark at 12 o' clock.

Furthermore, the chapter ring, hands and the timescale on the bezel are filled with “old-radium” coloured Super-LumiNova® that reminds the wearer of the beige-orange hue of vintage indicators that had patina. Another feature of the 1960 model is the date-display window at 3 o' clock and a dominant yellow and red “no traditions” logo at 6 o' clock.

The timepiece is crafted in a 40.3mm steel case and houses the Blancpain Calibre 1151 automatic movement that is equipped with a silicon balance spring that reserves a power backup of 4 days. Limited to just 500 pieces, the Blancpain Tribute to Fifty Fathoms No Rads comes in a “Tropic”-type rubber which is a very popular material for divers because of its durability and comfort.
