Watch in Focus: The Hublot Big Bang Meca-10 Blue Ceramic

Hublot’s Big Bang Meca-10 Blue Ceramic features a watch movement with a 10-day power reserve and an iconic indigo blue ceramic case, thereby combining cutting-edge mechanics and ultra-resistant material.

The Big Bang is a flagship hublot line, one that sees plenty collaborations, innovations, and experimentation. This year itself has seen the new Sang Bleus, Unico Berluti, DJ Snake, Ceramic Integrals, and the Unico Yellow Magic, amongst others. But they have all followed the Big Bang Meca-10 Blue Ceramic, which are turning the spotlight on today.

Released in 2018, the standout in this timepiece is its unusual design – a skeleton dial - based around a construction set, and the visible cogwheel power reserve indicator. The 45mm piece is created in high-tech ceramic, personifying the brand's commitment to the 'Art of Fusion'. The case, bezel, and folding clasp are made of high-tech ceramic - zirconium dioxide with high temperature sintering - that makes the watch resistant to scratches.

But then again, it is the face of the watch that makes a statement. Developed over two years, its manually-wound skeleton calibre, the HUB1201, with a 10-day power reserve, contains 223 parts. Two barrels rest parallel to the power reserve indicator: A cogwheel system with two rakes sliding along a horizontal axis. An opening at 3 o'clock unveils a red dot when the movement is nearing the final days of its power reserve, while at 6 o'clock, the exact number of days remaining are indicated. A small seconds counter is at 9 o’clock. The case is equipped with double anti-reflective treated scratch-resistant sapphire crystals on both sides.

According to Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO, Hublot, “This Big Bang captures the brand's essence in all respects. Made at our modern and perfectly integrated factory, the Big Bang Meca-10 demonstrates the complete mastery we have of our industrial resources, from R&D to the creation of calibres, high-tech cases, and innovative materials."

Super-LumiNova is incorporated in the hands and indices. The case and bezel are made of micro-blasted and polished blue ceramic. While the upper part of the bezel which is fixed to the case with six screws designed as the letter H, is produced from the same material as the case, while the lower part is made of black composite resin material.

The model comes on a rubber strap with a top side finished in matching blue colour. The lining is black and the strap is secured with a Hublot signed folding clasp made of black polished ceramic and black plated titanium. With a sapphire back, this duo is worn with a lined structured rubber strap with a "One Click" fastener, for quick and easy strap changing.
