"The Fifty Fathoms is not just one model, it’s a family," Marc A. Hayek, President & CEO of Blancpain, observed. "And one important model in this family is the Bathyscaphe." This sentiment anchors Blancpain’s latest release, marking the 70th anniversary of a lineage that redefined the diving watch. The new Ref. 5903 1110 63A is produced in a strictly limited edition of 300 pieces, offering a faithful reproduction of a landmark 1968 model—a time when the diver’s watch began its transition from a military essential to a civilian companion.
The expansion of the Fifty Fathoms line was a vision of Jean-Jacques Fiechter, Blancpain’s CEO and a pioneer of the diving world. While the original 1953 Fifty Fathoms was born as a robust, 41 mm professional instrument for combat divers and specialists, Fiechter recognised the potential for a "Skin Diver"—a watch that preserved the essential safety features of a diver but was scaled for the world of recreational exploration.
The latest Ref. 5903 1110 63A
Launched in 1956, the Bathyscaphe arrived with a compact 35 mm case with a philosophy rooted in leisure and personal adventure. The design of the anniversary edition honours the silhouette of the 1968 landmark while introducing a tactile quality that only modern materials can provide. The case was meticulously developed "around the movement" to maintain a slender case middle—a crucial detail that ensures the watch sits with a low, harmonious profile against the wrist, avoiding the bulk often associated with modern diving watches.
Measuring 37.4 mm, the watch features a sunburst meteor grey dial providing a backdrop for 18-karat white gold indexes and baton hands. Blancpain has removed the "Incabloc" text found on the 1968 original resulting in a cleaner, more contemporary dial that emphasises the vintage-style logo and the date window at 3 o'clock. The "vintage-colour" Super-LumiNova® provides a warm, honeyed glow perfectly complementing the hand-stitched chocolate calf leather strap.
The Blancpain Manufacture Calibre 1150 provides runs the watch offering 100-hour power reserve—approximately four days of autonomy, visible through a sapphire crystal exhibition back. The centrepiece of this view is the openworked 18-karat gold rotor, designed as an homage to the original Fifty Fathoms weight.
Overall, it offers the daily wear credentials expected of an iconic diver—including a water resistance of 30 bar (300 meters)—paired with the exclusivity of a 300-piece limited run.
