Montblanc is celebrating 100 years of its popular Meisterstück fountain pen, Montblanc has unveild a limited edition Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Meisterstück 100 Years watch, which takes its design cues from the iconic black cigar-shaped writing instrument with three gold rings and a handcrafted gold nib. The name ‘Meisterstück’ is German for ‘masterpiece’, reflecting the pen’s German roots, which was originally created by the artisans at Montblanc for their personal use and to honour the craft, after years of perfection. The blueprint of the maison’s flag bearer was laid out in 1920 and in 1924, the maison made it available for sale for its clients after their requests for a special fountain pen for their ‘Sunday use’. The 500-piece limited edition novelty combines the brand’s one of the most sought-after writing instruments with a unique timing device invented by Nicolas Rieussec.
Rieussec was the sixth royal watchmaker to the King of France and a business-minded individual who saw an opportunity in the horse racings that were popular in Paris in the 19th century. The Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Meisterstück is based on Rieussec’s inking chronograph, a device for measuring elapsed time using a fixed nib and ink, which he created in 1821 to test at the Paris’ Champs-de-Mars horse racing, measuring the precise timing for every horse crossing the finish line. The nib placed an ink drop on two rotating counters, one for the minute and the other for seconds, every time a horse crossed a finish line. It was a successful invention that he then presented to the Academy of Sciences in Paris, whose members were fascinated by it and named it a ‘chronograph’, derived from the Greek ‘chronos’ (time) and ‘graphein’ (to write), and Rieussec became the first to devise an inking chronograph. Inspired by this device, the timepiece features two rotating counters, instead of rotating hands, one for 30 minutes and the other for 60 seconds, at 4 and 7 o’clock positions. There’s a single fixed index marker between the two counters that indicates the elapsed time. The ‘48’ and ‘10’ on these counters are stylised in reference to the 4810-metre height of the Mont Blanc, a numeral that has been artistically placed in various elements of the Meisterstück, such as the cap and the nib.
The 43mm Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Meisterstück 100 Years is crafted in polished stainless steel. The domed sapphire crystal gives an enhanced view of the black-coloured dial decorated with a luminescent printed motif of the Meisterstück’s blueprint. The design plans from the Montblanc emblem's dimension table, which appears on the cap of every Meisterstück and on the crown of Montblanc timepieces, are featured on the off-centred hours and minutes dial.
The Meisterstück is renowned for its black-and-white aesthetic, often accented with gold. The Arabic numerals are gold-coated, as well as the Dauphine hour and minute hands with blue luminescence, and the skeletonised dual-time hand is black rhodium-coated. The bridge between the chronograph discs is also coloured in gold. At 12 o’clock ‘Chronographe Nicolas Rieussec’ is mentioned, and ‘Académie des Sciences de Paris - 1821’ is at 6 o’clock, along with the date window. The monopusher chronograph in stainless steel is placed at 8 o’clock. The caseback reveals the oscillating weight, decorated with an intricate ‘8’ symbol pattern, inspired by calligraphy, further linking the timepiece to the art of writing.
Montblanc’s automatic Manufacture Calibre MB R200 powers the timepiece, beating at 4 Hz and with an autonomy of about 72 hours. The watch comes with an interchangeable black calf strap with alligator print and stainless steel triple-folding clasp.
