Watches and Wonders 2024: Montblanc’s new Iced Sea models, a sapphire-case Minerva, and material innovation

The Iced Sea and the 0 Oxygen concepts return with technical and material innovations, along with a monopusher chronograph from the Minerva manufacture, with a sapphire case middle.
Montblanc is putting its back into its 0 Oxygen concept and its Iced Sea dials inspired by glaciers – this what its novelties released at Watches and Wonders 2024 prove. Let’s dive in.

Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810

Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810

The first is the Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 (Ref. 133268), the brand’s diver’s watch that is water resistant to 4810 meters, which is the height of the Montblanc above sea level. The 43mm titanium watch comes with the 0 Oxygen concept – the case is devoid of any oxygen, due to which there is no fogging inside the case when there is drastic temperature changes, and also there is no oxidisation of components, which means they last longer – and a shield protects its screwdown crown. The blue dial with a gradation to black was inspired by the ice of one of the Mont Blanc mountain’s largest glaciers – the Mer de Glace. Its depicts the tone of ice found deep under the sea Its crafted using the ancient gratté-boisé that  takes four times longer than standard dial-making, and requires more than 30 separate steps that include volume stamping the dial, printing, lacquering, and polishing each layer, and then drying for an overnight process before applying the next layer—this is how a dial of a desired depth is attained. There is Super-LumiNova® with blue emission on the indexes and dot

The titanium caseback features  a 3D engraving of the view divers see when diving underneath the ice. The engraving is achieved by a process of laser-generated oxidization that creates both matte and shiny finishes to generates contrasts of colour and texture.

The watch runs on the COSC-certified, automatic MB 29.29 movement, with nearly five days of power reserve. It comes with an interchangeable black rubber strap with taper and stainless steel double-folding clasp with fine adjustment system

Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen CARBO2

Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen CARBO2

The 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen CARBO2 Limited Edition 1969 (Ref. 132300) features an innovative composite material called CARBO2, created by capturing CO2 from biogas production and mineral waste generated by recycling factories, through a calcium dissolution and carbonation process. The result is a CO2-CACO3 (calcium carbonate) powder, is then combined with ultra-light and resistant carbon fibre. It is this final material that forms the case middle of the latest 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen CARBO2 Limited Edition 1969. No two  cases are the same as carbon has the tendency to attain unique patterns, and the material is significantly hardy, robust, and light. Its patina is also set to change over time. The idea of the CARBO2 took root more than two years ago, and the brand is restricting its use only to this new collection.

Aesthetically, the 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen CARBO2 Limited Edition 1960 picks up its defining features from the 1858 Geosphere line - its highlight is the white lume-coated Northern and Southern hemispheres at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock respectively, with blue Greenwich meridians, a 24-hour scale, day & night indications, a dual time counter at 9 o’clock, and a date window located at 3 o’clock alongside Montblanc’s logo. The dial boasts a black and white sfumato glacier pattern with rhodium-coated Arabic numerals, hour markers, and hands, all applied with white luminescence. Once again, the gratté-boisé technique is at play here. The case measures 43.5mm, and is topped with an anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, domed sapphire crystal, underneath which is a special blue gasket that ensures no oxygen enters the case. Further, there is a bi-directional titanium and ceramic knurled bezel with blue Super-LumiNova® applied to the cardinal points, and a black coated stainless steel fluted crown with Montblanc emblem at 3 o’clock.

Once again, using the 3D laser colour engraving, the brand has recreated the Mont Blanc on nthe caseback. Another highlight of this piece is its engraved luminous blue outline of the Mont Blanc on the side of the case, glowing white by day and blue by night, inspired by the nature of the glaciers - a layer of Super-LumiNova® and protective varnish have been applied by hand. Complementing the creation is a tapered black interchangeable rubber strap with a pattern reminiscent of the textiles used by mountaineers, with a fine adjustment system

Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date – Bronze-tone Dial and Burgundy-tone Dial

Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date – bronze-tone dial

The time and date Iced Sea models return, this time in new dial shades and materials. Inspired by the color of the setting sun over the glacier, Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date – Bronze-tone Dial (Ref. 133300) features a black glacier pattern dial with a warm bronze-tone case. This 41mm case is crafted from cupro aluminium, a special alloy made from aluminium and copper that is 1.5 times more resistant than bronze and is highly resistant to corrosion and rust. It will develop a patina over time. The watch features a bi-color unidirectional anodized aluminum bezel, a new Montblanc Iced Sea logo inspired by a vintage Minerva export seal.

Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic – burgundy-tone dial

The 41mm steel Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic – Burgundy-tone Dial (Ref.132291) features a burgundy-tone dial inspired by the deep red color of the evening sun as it hits the glacier. The dial is paired with a black ceramic unidirectional bezel and is fitted with an interchangeable stainless-steel bracelet which is adjustable on the wrist, so each owner can find their perfect fit. Both watches feature a 3D engraving on the titanium caseback D of an  an iceberg and diver. Both are powered by the MB 24.17 (power reserve 38 hours). The bronze dial watch comes on an interchangeable black rubber strap with a brown outline, while the burgundy dial comes with an interchangeable tapered steel bracelet.

Montblanc 1858 The Unveiled Minerva Monopusher Chronograph

All details of the reversed movement are visible

1858 Unveiled Minerva Monopusher Chronograph is a skeletonised watch, where the brand has made the effort to make each and every of its 291 parts visible. The movement in question is the Montblanc Manufacture Calibre MB M17.26, a manually wound Monopusher Chronograph that features a reversed movement with regulating organ, going-train, bridges and plate visible through watch’s dial. The 43mm stainless steel case has been created with sapphire openings in the middle – 5 to be exact – that allow one to appreciate the movement from every angle. To aid this, the movement has been constructed on pillars.

Details are also visible from the side of the case

The chronograph bridge has also been put on top of the movement, and the German silver plates and bridges are in blue. The chronograph indications are also sapphire so that they don’t distract from the movement -there is a open-worked 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 and an open-worked small seconds display at 9. The hands and indexes have been created with Super-LumiNova® for enhanced legibility. The watch has a white gold fluted bezel, inspired by Minerva’s first fluted bezel from 1927.
