Richard Mille’s two new RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflats redefine geometry

The latest watches are inspired by the RM 016, the brand’s first rectangular watch in the collection.
Reinterpreting the RM 016, the first and original rectangular watch in the collection released in 2007, the new RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat versions have a purposeful artistic charm and urban aesthetics. The model comes in two iterations - titanium, and a new colour, Terracotta Quartz TPT®.

The design approach of RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat by Richard Mille
The RM 16-02 's distinctive rectangular shape is a refined evolution of its predecessor, though smaller and more compact, measuring just 36mm x 45.65mm. Despite its slim profile, it offers a robust structure. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters and securely sealed by three nitrile O-ring seals and 12-grade 5 titanium spline screws.

From an aesthetic point of view, the watch relies on the Brutalist style, a design language based on raw materials. The skeletonized movement of RM 16-02, with its labyrinthine network of titanium and platinum, plays with light and shadow, and invites the viewer to engage more deeply with the complex geometry of the watch.

The dial of RM 16-02 is fascinating with its indexes that follow a wire decoration reminiscent of Ariadne's thread, which shows the way through the intricate labyrinth of the movement's skeleton. In Greek mythology, the Cretan princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos, gave Theseus Ariadne's thread. Thanks to the thread, Theseus managed to escape from the labyrinth where the Minotaur was lurking.

The CRMA9 movement by Richard Mille – the journey is the destination
At the heart of the RM 16-02 is the skeletonized CRMA9 titanium movement. The in-house calibre was developed to combine mechanical precision with extreme lightness. The baseplate and bridge design is made of grade 5 titanium and covered with an electroplasma-treated, micro-blown grey finish.

The variable inertia balance wheel further contributes to the watch's reliability by increasing shock resistance while ensuring consistent timekeeping - over the years. The heart of the movement is powered by a platinum rotor with a OneWay winding mechanism that efficiently uses the energy necessary to maintain the 50-hour power reserve.

Two ways lead to the goal – the two versions of the RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat
The RM 16-02 is available in two versions: one made of Grade 5 titanium and one with the innovative Terracotta Quartz TPT. The material is made from silicate threads infused with a coloured matrix and processed under high pressure to create a special and unique composite. The titanium version, on the other hand, impresses with its micro-blown satin finish and polished edges that exude a sleek, modern approach.

The exclusivity of the watch is reflected in its price: the titanium version costs Rs. 1,15,91,000 (approx.) while the Terracotta Quartz TPT version is available at Rs. 1,31,95,000 (approx.)
