Phillips & Blackbird: SPORTS

Phillips presents a first of its kind auction for the Asian market, focusing on sports watches on the 27 May in Hong Kong. The auction will be the first one in the world to be curated by an Asian collector, Mr. TK Mak, the founder of Blackbird. Featuring 82 lots, the watches will be sorted into six different categories, namely wind, air, snow, tarmac, lawn and water. Highlights from each are given below.

Made in 1966, the ref. 6420 was the first “Cosmograph” to be equipped with screwdown chronograph pushers and one of the extremely few dials to feature the iconic “Paul Newman” designs as well.

WIND with Rolex reference 6240

A rare Rolex GMT-Master with a preserved Bakelite bezel makes this a fine museum-grade level timepiece to have. It is available with the original COSC certificate.

AIR with Rolex reference 6542

The only vintage Rolex series to feature a triple calendar and chronograph complication, the reference 6036 is named after the legendary three-time Olympic ski champion and Rolex testimonee Jean-Claude Killy. The Killy 6036 comes with the original riveted, expandable bracelet and a rare dial featuring yellow gold indexes and hands.

Easily recognisable as a “pre-Daytona”, the reference 6234 is one of the few well-preserved models from the Rolex Oyster chronograph family. It comes with a black glossy dial featuring tachymeter and telemeter scales.

The well-appreciated ref. 2499/100 is one of the most sought-after pieces by collectors worldwide. There are only a total of 120 examples which were created of the piece of which this particular yellow gold perpetual calendar chronograph is available in an untouched condition with th e original box, hang tag, booklets and Extract from the Archives.

Indisputably the holy grail level “Big Crown: Submariner for connoisseurs, the Rolex ref. 6538 comes with the original, correct dial, bezel and winding crown. This is the only reference which has actually been featured on the big screen on James Bond's wrist. It comes fitted with the finely-preserved stainless steel “Big Logo” bracelet.

The much talked-about, record-breaking skydive from space in 2012 by Felix Baumgartner also helped push the credibility of the Zenith El Primero to even further heights. Seen here is the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th prototype which was created for Felix. The stainless steel flyback chronograph is one of the test watches which contributed to the defining moment of human history in 2012.

You probably got it from the headline already but this yellow gold-plated stainless steel Universal Geneve Polerouter was owned and worn by Bruce Lee, one upon a time. Featuring a sweep center seconds, the wristwatch is accompanied by a letter from the former owner confirming the memento as having belonged to the master himself.
