Tissot’s new PRC 100 Solar runs 24 hours with just 10 minutes of daylight

The PRC 100 features Tissot’s Lightmaster Solar Technology, albeit this time with a slightly different execution
Yesterday, Tissot put out a teaser video on their Instagram showing a watch silhouette and captioned it, “A new era of unstoppable energy is coming. Are you ready to master the light?”.  While one could ascertain it was solar energy that the brand was talking about - solar energy has been powering Tissot watches for more than a decade now - what wasn’t expected was its debut in the PRC 100 collection, in five PRC 100 Solar watches.

The new PRC 100 Solar watches, where PRC is an abbreviation of ‘Precise’, ‘Robust’, and ‘Classic’, feature Lightmaster Solar Technology, which enables the watch to use both natural and artificial light to run continuously, even with minimal exposure to the light sources. However, a differentiating factor is that while Tissot has so far installed visible photovoltaic panels beneath the dial for the light to be absorbed, in the PRC 100 Solar there are microscopic honeycomb-structured solar light panels just beneath the sapphire crystal. This allows better light absorption, which happens without any hindrance to the dial design.

This light energy then relocates to the F06.615 Quartz Swiss Made movement through a zebra connector integrated within the case. Excess energy is stored in a rechargeable accumulator that can power watch for 14 months in the dark on a full charge. The movement is made so that it optimises energy, and allows the watch to work even with minimal light exposure. Finally, it takes only 10 minutes of daylight for the watch to function for 24 hours.

Five variants of the Tissot PRC 100 Solar have been launched - two with black dials and a black PVD-coated stainless steel case, two stainless steel silver dial watches, and a stainless steel blue dial watch. The watches are complemented with stainless steel or leather straps.

All are 39mm timepieces with minimal dial aesthetics featuring a minute track, Super-LumiNova applied baton hour marks and hands, and a date window at 3 o’clock.

The first Tissot watch to have solar-powered functionality was the T-Touch Expert Solar launched in 2014 in the brand’s Touch collection. Since then Tissot has made several solar-powered watches, each an upgrade on the previous one. The new PRC 100 Solar in the line proves the same. Tissot will also bring the PRC 100 Solar in a smaller case size of 34mm later this year.
